“I was scrolling the internet late one night about 10 years ago. I was a relatively new medical massage therapist trying to find my niche and negotiating this new business model. When I came across this woman named Meagan Holub, claiming through this new book of hers, that you could make a hundred thousand dollars a year as a massage therapist…! I laughed out loud and thought, “The Gaul of this one…”.
So I engaged in a conversation online with her and asked what made her so confident as to put out such a claim. I immediately found out that this woman speaks her mind, means what she says, and has no fear when it comes to taking care of herself and her interests in the world of massage therapy. We’ve been friends ever since.
I bought her book and blazed through it. In it she lays out sound business practices. Common sense arguments of dress, taste, decorum and people skills. Things not even discussed in the massage school I had gone to. I mean they really made sense, if you were going to capture a market of upper end clients and get paid the highest amount of money possible. Again, not a thing taught in massage school usually.
At the time she was working in Seattle, had a thriving , well established business and was well known in the industry up there. As it would happen, within the year my wife and I had a planned vacation in Seattle. I called and asked Meaghan who worked on her? She said that she would love to get a massage from me when I was in town ( I must say, I was still expecting pretense and a sense of ego with such a well established personality, and found none). She came to me in my Air BnB and behaved like a “normal” client, which again, I did not expect. She paid and tipped generously and booked for a second treatment the next day.
Over the years we have met up when she’s in town or close to me. We have exchanged ideas and barbs, and kept close that way. I have always said that if I ever hit 100k I would meet her wherever she is and buy her dinner. Since our first meeting and discussion I had a full time job for the County I live in and did massage as a part time gig. As I got better, more confident, gained more knowledge and became very proficient in my craft, the tables turned professionally so that in 2017, I retired and opened Redlands Massage Therapy in Southern California. Within 2 years of opening a storefront, using a lot of the suggestions initially learned in her book, and a lot of education and good business sense, I earned over $125k that year and have consistently hit over $100k since.
When I learned from my bookkeeper that was the number, I texted Meagan immediately and asked if I could call her. She stated she was very busy. I said it was really important. When I called and told her, we both cried. After ten years, a pipe dream started from this crazy-like- a-fox entrepreneur had become a realization.
